Will Hemp Come Up on a Drug Test?

Hemp is everywhere these days. Whether you’re chewing CBD gummies, smoking joints, or even buying hemp-infused skincare, you can’t deny that hemp is far more prevalent now than it used to be. It’s wonderful that so many people are discovering the wellness benefits of hemp. But if you’re subject to routine drug testing for work, sports, or school, you probably have some concerns. In fact, I’d wager you’re currently wondering, “Will hemp come up on a drug test?” To learn both the answer and the reasons behind it, simply scroll down.

Hemp & Drug Testing

Because hemp is legal and non-psychoactive, many people immediately assume that hemp won’t affect drug tests. But do you want your employment or enrollment to hinge on an assumption? Of course not! Today, we’re focusing on the facts to clear up any confusion. So, will hemp come up on a drug test?

Will I fail a drug test if I use hemp?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: maybe . . .

Basically, most drug tests are designed to detect the presence of several drugs. To check for marijuana, tests typically focus on metabolites of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. Hemp is very low in THC. In fact, its THC content is typically lower than 0.3%, which is the legal limit in the United States. But just because hemp is low in THC, does that mean a drug test will fail to pick up the trace amount of THC? Not necessarily. There is never a 100% guarantee, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid hemp products if you have a drug test on the horizon.

Full-Spectrum vs. Broad-Spectrum vs. Isolate

Whether you’re looking at oils, edibles, vape pens, or joints, remember that hemp-derived products have different contents and formulations. To better understand the likelihood that you’ll fail or pass a drug test, check whether the product is full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolate.

  • Full-spectrum products contain all the available cannabinoids in the hemp plant, including trace amounts of THC. So if you consume a full-spectrum hemp product, you should expect that you will fail a drug test that detects THC.
  • Broad-spectrum products contain all of hemp’s cannabinoids except THC. You can enjoy a variety of compounds – CBD, CBG, CBN, terpenes, flavonoids, etc. — but zero THC. You’re much less likely to fail a drug test with a broad-spectrum product.
  • Isolate products are the purest form available. They remove everything from the hemp plant except a single cannabinoid (often CBD) — no THC, no minor cannabinoids, no terpenes, no flavonoids. You’re even less likely to fail a drug test with an isolate product.

Keep in mind that broad-spectrum and isolate products are often labeled “THC free” or “Zero THC.” Whichever option you choose, you’re far less likely to have a positive drug test than if you’d chosen a full-spectrum product. However, again, it’s important to recognize that even broad-spectrum and isolate products aren’t risk-free when it comes to drug testing. Trace amounts of THC may remain.
