What Is THCv?
You’re likely familiar with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), but what about tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCv)? Another cannabis-derived compound, THCv has become increasingly well-known due to its unique characteristics. Although it’s not currently as coveted as THC or CBD, if you keep an eye on it, we have a feeling you’ll see it surge in popularity in the coming years. So, what is THCv? What are its benefits? And how can you give it a try?
Exploring Tetrahydrocannabivarin
First of all, tetrahydrocannabivarin is quite a mouthful, so don’t be afraid to shorten it to easy, breezy THCv.
What is THCv? It’s a cannabinoid found mainly in sativa strains of cannabis, though it’s also present in lower amounts in indica strains and hybrid blends. Unlike THC, THCv doesn’t have any psychoactive effects, which means it won’t affect your thinking. Instead, scientists believe that it affects certain nerve cells in the brain. On a molecular level, it’s more complex than THC, boasting seven possible double-bond isomers and 30 stereoisomers. When isolated and purified into stronger concentrations, it can be used for medicinal applications.
Discovered in 1970 by researchers at the University of Oxford, THCv was quite rare until recently. But in 2018, the federal government legalized hemp, which boosted the number of synthetic cannabinoids in the United States. In addition, cannabis farmers began developing plants naturally rich in THCv. Now, THCv can be found in a variety of products, and while research is still ongoing, many people are excited about the potential benefits of this cannabinoid.
How Does It Work?
Like nearly all cannabis compounds, THCv interacts with a specific type of receptor that regulates physiological processes like metabolism, memory, and pain. This receptor is concentrated in the brain. While THC activates this receptor, THCv blocks it. So, instead of experiencing the typical effects of weed, like feeling sleepy or getting the munchies, THCv may make you more alert and less hungry.
What Is THCv Known For?
Although its therapeutic effects haven’t been explored in detail yet, and it hasn’t been evaluated in any FDA clinical trials, THCv’s unique structure may give it the potential to provide numerous health benefits. Early studies have researchers excited about the possibilities. According to current evidence, THCv may provide the following benefits:
- THCv may help people feel more motivated, alert, and energized.
- THCv may relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and decrease panic attacks.
- THCv may boost metabolism, suppress appetite, and increase satiety, all of which could help with weight loss.
- THCv may reduce cravings for addictive substances.
- THCv may reduce inflammation and provide pain relief.
In addition, although further studies are needed, there has been interest in using THCv to treat diabetes, seizures, chronic pain, PTSD, Alzheimer’s disease, and a variety of other health conditions.
Will THCv Show Up on a Drug Test?
Yes, a drug test may reveal the presence of THCv in your system. Although extensive studies have not been conducted yet, so we don’t know whether all types of samples (saliva, blood, hair, etc.) will produce a positive drug test, THCv has been detected in urine samples. If you want to be safe, it’s best to avoid all cannabis-derived products before a blood test.
