Indica vs. Sativa
If you’re a newcomer to the world of cannabis, you’ll likely be confronted with a number of terms you don’t understand yet, including sativa and indica. Contacting the friendly staff at a reputable shop is a great way to get your questions answered and find a product that works for you. But of course, a little internet research can also help point you in the right direction. Today, we’re going to explore the similarities and differences between indica and sativa so that you feel a little more confident when shopping for products derived from the cannabis plant. Indica vs. sativa: how do they compare?

What Are Indica and Sativa?
Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa are two unique strains of the cannabis plant. While indica is a short plant with broad leaves and a woody stalk, sativa is tall with thin leaves and tends to grow more quickly. Although these two types of cannabis are related, they also have key differences that impact how they affect the human body. Let’s take a look at the key differences of indica vs. sativa:
- Growth Climate: Indica is grown in drier climates, while sativa is grown in tropical, humid climates.
- Appearance: Indica typically grows to 2-4 feet and has broad, dark leaves. Sativa, on the other hand, grows to 5-18 feet and has thin, greener leaves. Sativa sometimes flowers as well.
- Effect of Consumption: Indica is a sedative, which means it soothes and relaxes you. It may also make you feel sleepy. For this reason, some people use the handy memory aid “in da couch,” referencing how after consuming indica, someone might wish to simply chill on the sofa. Sativa produces the opposite effect; it’s a stimulant, which means it energizes and uplifts users and may produce a euphoric effect. People are also more likely to describe the effects of indica as a “body high,” and the effects of sativa as a “head high.”
- Possible Uses: Because it relaxes the body, some people consume indica to get better sleep, lessen pain and inflammation, and reduce muscle spasms. Sativa might be used to help with a depressed mood, stress, or loss of appetite.
- CBD-to-THC Ratio: Indica has more CBD than THC, but the ratio is often quite close to 1:1. Sativa includes more THC than CBD.
When it comes to the effects of indica and sativa, keep in mind that a cannabis plant’s strain is just one factor; compounds known as terpenes can also impact your mood, energy, and general experience. In addition, the amount of cannabinoids like THC and CBD can play a significant role in how a product makes you feel.
Furthermore, although the strains have unique physical and chemical characteristics, it’s typically a bit tricky to predict how they will affect your body. Why? Because these plants have been bred and hybridized for many years, the distinction between the two often isn’t clear-cut. It’s somewhat rare to find pure indicas and sativas these days. Instead, you’ll often find hybrid strains, which might be termed “indica-dominant” or “sativa-dominant.” Hybrids may give you a mix of sativa and indica’s effects.
