How to Use CBD Tincture: Tips and Steps

What Is a CBD Tincture?

Before explaining how to use CBD tincture, let’s discuss what it is and how it differs from other methods of taking CBD.

Tinctures come in small glass bottles with dropper tops, enabling users to administer small, precise doses of the tincture orally. Historically, an actual “tincture” referred to an herbal extract suspended in alcohol. However, today, many CBD tinctures combine CBD extract with a carrier oil (like medium-chain triglyceride or MCT oil) as the base instead of alcohol.

CBD tinctures with an oil base are much more popular than those using a traditional alcohol base. While the amount of alcohol in an alcohol-based tincture is minimal, oil bases are often preferred by consumers who are sensitive to alcohol or who otherwise wish to avoid it. Another downside of alcohol-based tinctures is their taste: extracting CBD using high-proof alcohol as the solvent results in a bitter final product that is offputting to many consumers. Some manufacturers will try to mask the bitter taste with additives like sweeteners, flavoring, or vegetable glycerin, which is a downside for consumers who appreciate products with few additives.

How to Take CBD Tincture

  1. Shake the bottle to ensure that the oil and CBD are well incorporated.
  2. Use the dropper to measure your dose.
  3. Place the drops under your tongue and hold for 30-60 seconds.
  4. Swallow any remaining liquid
  5. Enjoy!

The sublingual (under the tongue) method described above allows maximum absorption and the fastest action. However, as an alternative, you can add drops of your CBD tincture to water, juice, smoothies, or other foods or drinks.

Benefits of CBD Tinctures

CBD tinctures offer some distinct advantages that many CBD consumers appreciate:

  • CBD tinctures are easily absorbed and faster-acting than gummies or lozenges, meaning their effect is felt more quickly.
  • CBD tinctures have a long shelf life.
  • CBD tinctures allow for precise dosing control down to the drop.

Choosing the Right CBD Tincture for You

Full-Spectrum

Full-spectrum CBD tinctures contain all the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other natural compounds found in the hemp plant, including trace amounts of THC (below 0.3 percent in the U.S.). Known for the “entourage effect,” where the combination of cannabinoids and terpenes enhances the overall therapeutic benefits, full-spectrum CBD tinctures are ideal for those seeking holistic benefits and who are not concerned about trace THC levels.

Broad-Spectrum

Broad-spectrum CBD tinctures are similar to full-spectrum tinctures, with one key difference: all traces of THC have been removed. Broad-spectrum tinctures offer many of the benefits of full-spectrum CBD but are more suitable for those sensitive to THC or who wish to avoid it.

Dosage

The right CBD tincture for you will depend on several factors. Your weight, metabolism, tolerance, and other factors can influence how your body absorbs and responds to CBD. If you’re new to CBD or unsure where to start, CBD tinctures make it easy to start low and go slow. Use the tincture’s label to determine how much CBD is in one dropper, which holds 1 milliliter. For example, our Zero-THC Broad Spectrum Tincture label tells customers that it contains 33.3 milligrams per 1 milliliter, meaning that if you take one full dropper, you’ll get 33.3 milligrams of CBD. Each dropper contains about 20 drops, so you can control how much CBD you take down to the milligram.
